Founder biography

A little about me

I'm Shirena Watt, founder of Watt Helps®. I was initially diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder. For me, periods of very low mood have been connected with psychotic episodes. I was diagnosed with autism at 31, during an admission to a psychiatric unit, when my needs were assessed.

Before I understood myself and my support needs, I left two tech support roles. Difficulties with housing and other pressures also became overwhelming. Through a lot of self-directed learning, I have come to understand more about my mood, autism, schizoaffective disorder and what helps me.

Why Watt Helps®

Why I created Watt Helps®

I have felt failed by mental health services and other systems at times when I needed understanding and practical support. I wanted help that took account of my circumstances and listened to what I was finding difficult, before everything became too much.

Taking part in a peer support programme alongside other people with lived experience helped me recognise the value of shared understanding. It encouraged me towards starting Watt Helps®: a person-centred approach to offering the kind of support I wish I had received.

I want people to have somewhere to turn when difficulties begin to build, with space to understand their situation, explore what may help and find a way forward.

Perspective

Learning from lived experience

I am not a clinical or health professional. I bring lived experience, what I have learned through my own efforts, and a commitment to listening without assuming that someone else's experience will be the same as mine.

My experience has taught me how much it matters to understand a person's needs in the context of their everyday life. That perspective shapes Watt Helps® and its focus on practical, non-clinical peer support.

Professional interests

What I care about

My interests include peer support, autism and mental health, and practical approaches to the pressures people face around work, housing and everyday life.
